Living and Learning

I wanted to sit down and try to write an actual blog post because lately it feels like everything is swirling around me. One problem after another keeps popping up in my life and I think it's time to start blowing off a little steam.

Today in one of my classes at school, we had to answer three questions:

1. What we planned on doing after graduating high school.
2. What career we wanted. And
3. What we wanted our passions in life to bring us.

First of all, I just want to say (for myself and maybe the rest of my senior class) that deciding what/who you want to be for the rest of your life is a decision that takes a lot more time than you wish it did. After reading through everyone's answers, it's obvious we all have a little bit of a plan for our future and what we want to do. I know it's a question we'll get asked a lot, especially since we're nearing towards graduation. But I think the scariest part about it all is trying to figure out who we are in the process.

Let me put it simply:  we are not the same people we were when we were freshmen. We are barely the people we were when we started senior year, even. If I've come to learn anything about the whole high school--life--experience, it's that we cannot stop change, and learning to accept that is the hardest part. Suddenly friendships aren't as strong as they once were and each day goes by faster and faster. (There's about 30 days left.) We lose people and we gain others, and moving on with our lives seems both endlessly terrifying and beyond exciting.

As for figuring out the passions in life and what I hope it brings to me--I have no idea. I'm passionate about learning, thinking, creating stories and poetry. But what will come of it all is beyond me, and I'm still in the process of figuring it out, as I'm sure most of us are. Sometimes I wish there would be a preview, like a trailer, for the rest of our lives we could see so it isn't so hard to make all these choices. I also wish college didn't cost an arm and a leg, but what can you do?

Also, I think another part of growing up is learning what's best for you--not other people. We all come to these pivotal moments where, for once, we need to make a decision on what makes us happy. It's important to remember that you don't have to live for anyone other than yourself.

We live and we learn. So, to anyone who has no idea who they are or what they're doing with their lives, don't worry--you're not alone.

  1. Caitlin, you are one of my favorite people. I love your "realness", your creativity, your insights. I will miss our many conversations next year but I know you will be moving on to so many rich life experiences.
