the art of poetry

In my independent study, I attempted to imitate the one and only, E.E. Cummings.

Let me know what you think :)

the art of
poetry

to write a poem, you must become
your
words
you must remember to create vivid, vivac
ious,versatile volumes of things living
(also,remember to use alliteration)
wordplay is more than just a play on words
(okaymaybeitsnot)

write about love or the way your dad snores when he watches
his favorite animated movie               (Ice Age to be exact)
you can tell us the story about the time you
crash
landed///
a skateboard or when you sangsong like KellyClarkson on karaoke
try not to use cliches—like
“as welcome as a skunk at a lawn party”
(actually,maybe we
don’t need to talk about cliches)

to write a poem, you must open yourself up to
the world of
critics,nonbelievers
(the people who think poetry is stupid
don’t listen to them
they’re
the
stupid
ones)
it requires skill,
a balance
of sorts,
 to keep
ones tongue in this      const
ant motion
and if you can make someone think about
the smell of                             [coffee and cigarettes]
you’ve done your job

in order to write a poem, you must
find fictioninfacts
you must pull out
tears
even when you seem happiest

(i know
it’s
confusing)
but i’m sure you’ll get it eventually

honestly, it’s not all that hard to
create p o e t r y
it’s sort of like
riding a
 bike
down a busy street—similes
of polluted cars and
 steering
wheels
can come in handy

just remember, when you’re done,
don’t forget to
snap
your fingers,
close your storyjournal

and move on
